10.10Edit or remove a channel

Edit a channel#

  1. Select alerting, then channels, then the channel in the list.
  2. Change the name at the top, or the type's fields, such as the URL, address, bot token or headers. A saved credential is not shown (see below): type a new one to replace it, or leave the field blank to keep it.
  3. Select save channel. It is greyed out while the name is empty or a field has an error.
  4. Send a test alert (10.9) to check the change.
  • Saved credentials are hidden. A URL, token, key, signing secret or header value is never shown again after you save it, so a screenshot or a screen share cannot leak it. Its field starts empty, and the placeholder shows only its last characters, such as "saved · …intm — leave blank to keep". A URL also shows its host, such as hooks.slack.com/…a9f2. Leave the field blank to keep the saved value. What you type is hidden too; select show to check it. You do not need to enter the credentials again to send a test.
  • You cannot change a channel's type. To move from Slack to Teams, for example, add a new channel and delete the old one.
  • Email: if you change the address to someone else's, the channel is unconfirmed again and a new confirmation email is sent (10.2). If you change it to your own sign-in address, it is confirmed at once. Changing only upper and lower case, such as Ops@ to ops@, does not count as a new address.
  • Webhook: saving replaces all headers with the rows on screen. Saved headers show their names, with an empty value: leave the value blank to keep it, or type a new one. Select × to remove a header, or + add header to add one. To rename a saved header, remove it and add a new one. To remove the signing secret, select remove secret, then save channel. A blank secret field keeps the saved secret.

Remove a channel#

  1. Select the channel, then delete channel….
  2. Select yes, delete to confirm, or cancel to keep it.
  3. Check the monitors that used it. Their checks keep running. If this was a monitor's only channel, its alerts now go nowhere.

The channel is removed from every monitor that used it. Those monitors' pages warn "Attached to a channel that no longer exists". To get the channel back, create it again and attach it to your monitors again.

Use the API#

  • UpdateAlertChannel takes the id and only the fields you want to change, such as name or slackWebhookUrl. Fields you leave out keep their value, credentials included. Fields that do not match the channel's type are ignored.
  • To remove the signing secret, send "webhookSecret": "".
  • To change webhook headers, send webhookHeaders with replaceWebhookHeaders: true. Without it, the headers are ignored. With it, a header you send with an empty value keeps its saved value, a header with a value gets that value, and a header you leave out is removed.
  • DeleteAlertChannel takes the id and returns {}.
Replace a webhook channel's headers
bash
curl -s \
  "$OBSRVLY_API/monitor/obsrvly.v1.MonitorConfigService/UpdateAlertChannel" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $OBSRVLY_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"id": "<channel-id>",
       "webhookHeaders": {"Authorization": "Bearer <new-token>"},
       "replaceWebhookHeaders": true}'
