10.11Pushover

A Pushover channel pushes alerts to the Pushover app on your phones. It sends as a Pushover application you create on your own Pushover account, not as obsrvly's. You need two values:

  • User key: the key shown on your pushover.net dashboard. A group key works too, and pushes to every member of the group.
  • Application API token: the token of an application you create at pushover.net. Creating one is free.

Both are 30 letters and digits.

  1. Sign in at pushover.net and copy Your User Key from the dashboard.
  2. Under Your Applications, create an application. Name it obsrvly, for example. Copy its API Token/Key.
  3. In obsrvly, in New alert channel, choose Pushover.
  4. Enter a Name, the User key and the Application API token.
  5. Select Create channel, then send a test alert (10.9).

If either value is not 30 letters and digits, the dashboard shows "An API token is 30 letters and digits" or "A user key is 30 letters and digits". The API returns invalid input: pushover_user_key must be the 30-character user key or group key of a Pushover account, or the same for pushover_app_token.

What you get on your phone#

  • Down: a high-priority push, which comes through your quiet hours. It carries a link to acknowledge the incident (9.6).
  • Degraded and recovery: a normal push.
  • Acknowledged: a silent push that says who acknowledged it.
  • Alerts that arrive close together are grouped into one push (9.8).

Pushover's monthly limit#

  • Each refused alert shows in the notification history (9.10) as failed, saying the monthly limit is used up. It is not retried.
  • Pushover's dashboard shows how many messages are left this month.
  • Your team sends from its own application, so another team's alerts never use up your limit.

Edit the channel#

In the channel editor, user key and application api token can both be changed. See 10.10. In the channels list, a Pushover channel shows the last 4 characters of its user key, such as key …a1b2.

API: CreatePushoverChannel with name, pushoverUserKey and pushoverAppToken. UpdateAlertChannel replaces either one. pushoverUserKey and pushoverAppToken always come back empty, to the dashboard and to an API key; credentialHints gives their last characters (10.1).
