3.4Mute and snooze
To mute a monitor is to keep it checking but hold its "down" alert. Mute it while you fix a problem you already know about. To snooze is to mute until a set time. A snooze ends on its own.
Mute or snooze a monitor#
- Open the monitor and select Mute ▾.
- Choose Mute for 1 hour, Mute for 4 hours, Mute for 24 hours or Mute indefinitely.
- A badge appears next to the monitor's name. A snooze shows the time left, for example
muted 4h. Hover over it to see when it ends. An indefinite mute showsmuted. - To end a snooze early, select Unmute now. To end an indefinite mute, select Unmute.
While a monitor is muted:
- Checks run and results are recorded as usual.
- An incident still opens and appears in incidents, but the "down" alert is held.
- If the monitor is still down when the mute ends, the held "down" alert is sent. If you select Unmute, it is sent at once. If a snooze runs out, it is sent at the next failed check.
- Reminders are not sent. A reminder that comes due while muted is dropped. It is not sent later.
- No acknowledgement notice is sent when someone acknowledges an incident.
- TLS certificate expiry warnings are recorded but not sent.
- When the monitor recovers, the "resolved" notice is sent. It says the outage was not paged.
A snooze ends at its set time, even if no check runs at that moment.
Mute and snooze with the API#
Call UpdateMonitor with one of these bodies:
| To do this | Send |
|---|---|
| Mute indefinitely | {"id": "<id>", "muted": true, "clearMuteUntil": true} |
| Snooze until a time | {"id": "<id>", "muted": true, "muteUntil": "2026-10-27T18:00:00Z"} |
| Unmute (also clears the end time) | {"id": "<id>", "muted": false} |
| Turn a snooze into an indefinite mute | {"id": "<id>", "clearMuteUntil": true} |
muteUntil is a date and time in RFC 3339 format, in UTC. RFC 3339 is the standard YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SSZ form shown above.
"muted": trueon its own keeps any end time that is already set. The dashboard's Mute indefinitely always clears it.- In the dashboard, a snooze lasts 1, 4 or 24 hours. With the API, you can choose any end time.
- To read the state, look at
mutedandmuteUntilon the monitor.muted: truewith nomuteUntilmeans muted until you unmute. - A monitor can still show
muted: truewith amuteUntilin the past. Treat it as unmuted.
