10.2Email

An email channel sends alerts to one inbox. Before obsrvly sends alerts to someone else's address, a person at that address must confirm it.

  1. In New alert channel, choose Email.
  2. Enter a Name.
  3. Enter one Email address, for example ops@example.com.
  4. Select Create channel.

One address per channel#

  • A channel holds exactly one address. To alert several people, add a channel for each address, or use a shared team address.
  • If you type a comma or semicolon, the dashboard shows "One address only — add a channel per recipient". Without an @, it shows "Invalid email".
  • You can enter Name <ops@example.com>. obsrvly keeps only the address.

Confirm the address#

  • Your own sign-in address is confirmed at once. No email is sent.
  • Any other address gets a confirmation email first. The channel receives no alerts until someone at that address confirms. The dashboard shows "Confirmation email sent to <address>. It gets no alerts until someone there confirms."
  • Until then, the channel shows Awaiting confirmation. The editor says "alerts won't be sent until the address is confirmed". In the monitor form, its chip shows unconfirmed.
  • You can attach an unconfirmed channel to monitors. It starts getting alerts once the address is confirmed.

The email has the subject "Confirm this address for obsrvly alerts". It does not name your team, channel or monitor. It has two links:

  • Confirm, and receive these alerts opens a confirmation page. The person there does not need an obsrvly account. They select Confirm, and see "Address confirmed".
  • Never email me stops all obsrvly email to that address, for every team. It also works on an expired link. After that, adding the address fails with invalid input: this address has asked not to receive obsrvly email.

The link works once and expires after 7 days. On the confirmation page, nothing happens until the person selects a button. These are the results they may see:

Resend the confirmation email#

Open the channel in the editor and select Resend. A new email replaces the old link. The dashboard shows "Confirmation email sent to <address>."

  • One address can get at most 1 confirmation email every 10 minutes, and 5 a day.
  • One team can send at most 50 confirmation emails a day, across all addresses.
  • Past the address limit, Resend shows a confirmation email can go to an address at most once every 10 minutes and 5 times a day; try again later.
  • Past the team limit, it shows a team can send at most 50 confirmation emails a day; try again later.
  • If the address is already confirmed, you see this address is already confirmed, and the channel is marked as confirmed.

API: create the channel with CreateEmailChannel (name, emailTo). The reply shows emailVerified as true or false. Resend with ResendEmailVerification and the channelId.
